Strays is a deceptively emotional film. Focusing on an abandoned dog named Reggie (Will Ferrell) who decides to get revenge on his abusive owner Doug (Will Forte), the movie is very much the crass comedy it advertises itself as. But Strays also finds a surprising emotional heft throughout. It explores themes of toxic relationships and personal growth and does so with a cast of talking dogs embarking on their own foul-mouthed riff on Homeward Bound. That emotional honesty ends up being the film's secret weapon, elevating it beyond a straightforward parody into something far more compelling.
