Original Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter says Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 was “really interesting” and “about something important,” but the chances of it actually happening are pretty slim.

The actress spoke about what a third film could have looked like during an interview with Yahoo Entertainment. She explained that the shelved superhero movie would’ve been a worthy continuation for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. However, it will take a lot of fan power to get Jenkins’ ship moving again.

“I don’t think they want to do it unless there’s enough pressure from fans,” she said. “I just don’t think they have the mind to do it. And I don’t understand that, because it seems to me that Wonder Woman is different from other characters. She’s not just a superhero. Her whole thing is about peaceful solutions. She’s not aggressive to be aggressive. It’s a different story. It’s about inner strength, outer strength. I don’t know why they tabled it, because it’s a great franchise.”

Jenkins’ 2017 Wonder Woman film is widely regarded as one of the better DC films of the last decade. Although its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, is not quite as beloved, it’s still got its fair share of fans (we gave it an 8/10 in our review). Hope for another Gadot-led follow-up was diminished in 2022, though, as DC Studios moved reboot its movie universe under refreshed leadership from its new co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Warning: Spoiler for Wonder Woman 1984 below.

As Safran and Gunn look to pave a path forward with new films based on characters like Superman, Batman, and more, the chances Jenkins returns for a third Wonder Woman film are slim. Carter, who appeared in an after-credits scene in Wonder Woman 1984, is saddened by the project's potential demise and says that fans will miss out on more quality content from Jenkins.

“I have to give a lot of credit to Patty and Gal because the interest in my show had peaked when they came on the scene” she said, adding that their vision of the iconic character “was intentional — and how I played the character was intentional. To be good, kind, strong and do everything for the right reasons. Even when she was angry, she was angry at the right people.”

Now that the Wonder Woman director is moving on, she’s turning her focus from comic books to sci-fi. She recently picked back up her Star Wars: Rogue Squadron project at Disney, though it sounds like it's still in its early stages.
