It looks like some Switch 2 Edition upgrades will cost more than others

It appears the cost of upgrading games for the original Switch to their Switch 2 Editions is going to vary — in the U.K. and Europe, at least. Listings on the official U.K. and Ireland Nintendo websites show upgrades for Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land costing twice as much as the upgrades for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

In the U.K., the Mario Party and Kirby upgrades will cost £16.99, versus £7.99 for the Zelda upgrades. In Ireland, the pricing is €19.99 to upgrade Mario Party and Kirby, versus €9.99 for the Zelda games. The Zelda upgrades are priced at $9.99 in the U.S. (and are included in a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription).

Polygon has contacted Nintendo of America for confirmation of the U.S. pricing of Switch 2 Editions of these games, and will update this article when we hear back.

It’s yet another aspect of Nintendo’s Switch 2 pricing strategy that seems bound to cause confusion. But we can take a guess as to the rationale for the Mario Party and Kirby upgrades costing more.

As their absurdly long titles suggest, both games have substantial new additions on Switch 2. Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV adds a whole new play mode, while Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World adds a new storyline and levels to the platformer. There’s no additional content for the Zelda games — just graphical upgrades and the Zelda Notes companion app features.

It’s likely that Nintendo simply considers these upgrades to be more substantial, and thus worth more. Do you agree?
