The Xbox 360 store shuts down on July 29, 2024 on console and the marketplace website, Microsoft has announced.
According to Xbox Wire, Microsoft will cease purchases of new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace, as well as stop functionality of the Microsoft Movies & TV App on the Xbox 360 console. However, this will not impact the ability to play Xbox 360 games or DLC you’ve already bought.
Those games will not only continue to be playable on Xbox 360, but also on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S if they are backwards compatible. This applies to both digitally purchased and physical copies of games. Additionally, if you’ve deleted a game off your Xbox 360 console, it can still be re-downloaded even after July 2024.
Players will also be able to continue playing Xbox 360 multiplayer games if the publisher still supports online servers.
Earlier this year, a support article on Microsoft’s website said the Xbox 360 store would close in May 2023. At the time, Microsoft clarified to IGN this was a mistake, but now it is shutting down next year.
This isn’t the only digital storefront closing as Nintendo discontinued the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops back in March. Sony intended to close the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable stores back in 2021, but reconsidered its decision after fan backlash. While the PS3 and Vita stores are still up and running, the PSP store shutdown went ahead as planned.
