In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some characters were completely self-absorbed and only fought for their own sakes. Villains like Justin Hammer and Ronan the Accuser were like that, but by contrast, some villains and most heroes in the MCU actually fought for someone else's sake, shielding them from all harm.
