Saints Row’s third and potentially final expansion, A Song Of Ice And Dust, comes out August 8, developer Volition has announced.
The expansion launches ahead of Saint Row's August 24 Steam release, which comes alongside a new activity for players on all platforms.
Volition has yet to detail A Song Of Ice And Dust, save mention of new missions, new cosmetics, new weapons, new vehicles, and a brief blurb: “When a crippling ambush decimates the Dustlanders, it’s up to fierce rivals Bossonius and Gwendolyn Firebird to join forces and defend The DustFaire from a new foe.” Yep, it’s Saints Row does Game of Thrones.
A Song Of Ice And Dust is the final piece of DLC outlined in Saints Row’s post-launch roadmap and potentially brings an end to a reboot that endured a tough critical and commercial reception upon its August 2022 release. IGN’s Saints Row review came away with a 6/10: “Saints Row delivers no shortage of shallow shoot 'em up thrills, but it's a very familiar and uninspired brand of sandbox fun.”
In November, parent company Embracer merged Volition into Borderlands maker Gearbox. At the time, Embracer boss Lars Wingefors admitted “the reception of Saints Row did not meet the full expectations and left the fanbase partially polarized”.
Embracer later announced plans to close studios, cancel games, and lay staff off just weeks after a $2 billion contract deal fell through. While fellow Embracer-owned studio Crystal Dynamics said its work on the new Tomb Raider and Perfect Dark games was safe, Volition failed to issue a similar public statement on the future of Saints Row. In a tweet dated July 3 to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Volition said it was “excited for the future” of the studio.
