Marvel's and DC’s oldest crusaders and criminals have fought, died, and risen with Sisyphean persistence. For nearly a century, popular heroes and villains have transcended the borders of mortality so often that death and resurrection feel more like punchlines than drama. Naturally, it's been important to keep their characters consistent across these many deaths and resurrections, both to help readers relate to their favorite champions and malefactors and to make sure that their characters' growth really matters. However, as it stands, routine character and continuity resets have created a sense of stagnation across superhero fiction and the comics medium.
