Lord of the Rings has grown far beyond what author J.R.R. Tolkien would have intended. It's a fictional universe that many storytellers have taken a shot at making their own, to mixed results. While the brand was strengthened by Peter Jackson's iconic film trilogy, in recent years there have been mixed responses to the Hobbit films, Rings of Power prequel show, and other narrative material. Although audiences will be tracing the transition that's taking place on the screen with both enthusiasm and interest in what might come next, the video game slate is a very different story. The range of video games set within Middle-earth has been wildly inconsistent.
