Godzilla is pink now. That's something that surprised many fans in the debut trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, but its director has now made clear he isn't just chasing Barbie's box office success.
In an interview for IGN Fan Fest, Adam Wingard finally addressed perhaps the biggest visual change to Godzilla in its 70-year film history.
"It's interesting because in the last movie, Godzilla vs. Kong, it was really important to me to keep Godzilla consistent from King of Monsters, so that there was a continuity in terms of, whenever he's fighting with Kong I wanted it to feel like the Godzilla that you know versus the Kong that you know," Wingard explained.
"I wanted it to be part of the major drive of the story, why Godzilla was getting this new look. And the pink colour itself, it's not random. Within the movie there's actually reasoning behind why he actually turns pink. It's not just like, he evolves and for some reason the blue turns to pink."
Fans will therefore have to wait for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's premiere on March 29, 2024 to see the full reasons behind the giant lizard's neon hues. For as technical as that reason might get, however, Wingard admitted there was a bit of personal preference in there too.
"With that said, pink is my favourite colour," he laughed. "Our editorial that we edit the movie in, it was covered with pink lights, and generally I usually have pink fairy lights in any room that I'm in."
IGN Fan Fest has featured myriad other big entertainment franchises (though it's hard to outdo Godzilla and Kong on size), revealing the trailer for the Borderlands movie, revealing the release date for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Two, and debuting a first look at Roku's The Spiderwick Chronicles.
