For over 30 years, Batman: The Animated Series has been considered the gold standard for cartoon adaptations of The Dark Knight Detective. This is largely thanks to its more in-depth look at both Batman and his classic allies and enemies, the creation of popular original characters and the use of darker themes throughout the series' run. Unfortunately, since the series ran on network television (two seasons on Fox and one season as The New Batman Adventures on The WB) and was considered a children's show, many restrictions watered down some of the darker, more violent stories the creators wanted to tell.
