My SSD expansion cost just $50 today, Xbox owners: can you say the same? I kid, I own both consoles and probably use my Xbox more often, but $50 for a 1TB PS5 SSD is an insanely good price. You can see the deal here, but more importantly, why does it cost $140 for the equivalent on Xbox?
Here's the kicker, you can also pick up a 2TB SSD for $95 for Prime Day as well. At $45 less, you're getting double the storage vs Xbox. That's insane! These issues likely stem from the fact that Xbox went with a proprietary solution to their console. The Seagate and Western Digital plug-in-and-play memory cards are certainly cool, and easier to use, but boy are they incredibly expensive. At MSRP, the 2TB Seagate card even costs more than an Xbox Series S.
We're almost a few years into the current console cycle, and both Xbox and PlayStation have made some incredible quality-of-life upgrades on their consoles. Quick resume, haptic feedback, Game Pass, I could go on. Console wars are silly, but it's hard to not compare the sheer disparity between upgrading your storage on PS5 vs Xbox Series X or Series S.
The fact there's like hundreds of PS5 SSD options out there, and with prices so low, Sony probably made the right decision by choosing a third-party focused storage solution on their console. I upgraded my PS5 storage immediately when I saw these prices, but I'll likely continue to just delete games on my Xbox to make room for more.
