In light of Warner Bros. Games recent (and poor) decision to close Monolith Productions, I can’t help but think of all the good times I’ve had with the studio’s games throughout the years. The first of its games that I tried was 2005’s F.E.A.R. on my eMachines desktop that could barely run it. It’s a stylish action-horror FPS that made Half-Life 2, which released less than a year before, seem tame by comparison. There’s no better time than now to try out the game on PC, especially since it’s just $0.99 through GOG. That price is in effect through March 1, and it gets you a DRM-free copy of F.E.A.R. Platinum that also contains the two story-based add-ons, Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate.
F.E.A.R. has a special place in my heart because it felt next-gen at the time (it still feels pretty cool to play), thanks to its slow-down effects that turn on when you press a key, making all of the particle effects, bullets, sounds, and enemies slow to a crawl, so you can take in its dazzling, blood-soaked presentation.
The game was planned to be inducted at a later date into the GOG Preservation Program, which has recently added classic games such as Dino Crisis, the original Resident Evil games, and more. It not only re-releases the games, but ensures that they run well on modern machines. However, given the news of Monolith Productions’ closing, GOG is “accelerating this release to properly recognize Monolith’s contributions to gaming,” according to a statement shared on Wario64’s Bluesky profile.
