Neil Gaiman’s Sandman universe is often lauded for its originality in having brought more traditional literary elements to the superhero genre. Early issues find its titular protagonist working with Martian Manhunter and Mister Miracle, and even the golden age Wonder Woman’s daughter is integral to the greater tale (although her parentage has been retconned). All the while, Sandman tells a story of interpersonal family drama while skewing closer to horror, mature fantasy, and historical fiction than most mainstream comics of the time. Moreover, it builds a case for the importance and impact of mythology in human lives.
