Walden Review

Audiences have seen vigilante vengeance depicted in so many movies and television shows in the past few decades that it's impossible to count. Now, writer and director Mick Davis has given us his take on the age-old ideology of righting wrongs outside the courts. Walden, which stars Emile Hirsch in the title role, tells the story of a court stenographer who decides to take justice into his own hands when several horrendous criminals get off scot-free. Walden has an interesting set-up, akin to Showtime's Dexter, but the film never knows if it wants to take itself seriously or jump head-first into camp. Davis shoves way too much content into the film, making everything feel disjointed and hard to follow. Emile Hirsch is memorable as the lead, and while his performance definitely comes across as comedic and gleeful, which is a positive, it still ruffles the film's tone. Plenty of talent is on display in Walden, but the execution of a familiar story is too ambitious for its own good here.
