Amazon has hailed the success of Season 4 of superhero satire The Boys, saying viewership was up 20% compared to Season 3.

With The Boys Season 4’s hotly anticipated finale now out in the wild (complete with accompanying warning from Amazon), fans had wondered how well it had done compared to previous seasons amid the increasingly vociferous debate online about its storylines, character development, and politics.

IGN’s The Boys Season 4 finale review returned a 6/10. We said: “Season 4 of The Boys ends on a disappointing note, indicating a show on the decline and badly in need of some upgraded horsepower for Season 5.”

Despite this, over 55 million people watched Season 4 worldwide in the 39 days to the first weekend of the Season 4 finale on July 21, Amazon said. That’s enough to see Season 4 viewership up 20% on Season 3 over the equivalent time period, and global viewership growth for the third consecutive season.

Amazon said The Boys Season 4 is Prime video’s fourth most-viewed TV season of all time, and the second most-viewed returning season on the service after only Reacher Season 2. For context, Prime Video’s most-viewed TV season remains The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1, which was seen by 100 million people worldwide after its September 2022 release. Fallout Season 1, meanwhile, hit 65 million viewers in just two weeks.

Digging into the detail, Amazon said 60% of The Boys Season 4’s audience was based outside of the U.S., with “strong performances” in the UK, Brazil, India, Germany, Canada, France, Mexico, Spain, and Italy.

The Boys creator Eric Kripke has confirmed Season 5 will be its last, but that’s not the end of the universe. Laz Alonso, who plays The Boys team leader Mother’s Milk, wants a The Boys film to wrap up the series. There’s also the ongoing spin-off Gen V, set for Season 2.
