Five months after the world failed My Lady Jane, Amazon has ordered another adaptation of a YA fantasy book series. On Wednesday, Prime Video announced a series order for Rise of the Empress, based on Julia C. Dao’s duology of the same name.

The Rise of the Empress series introduces readers to Xifeng, an 18-year-old peasant whose vengeful aunt foretells her destiny to become the empress. A competition to win the prince’s hand in marriage provides the perfect opportunity for Xifeng to chase her fate, but to do so means embracing her dark magic and leaving her real love behind. These painful dilemmas are a core theme in the series, as again and again, Xifeng is faced with the question: Is there any price she won’t pay to become empress?

This reimagining of the Evil Queen’s origin is perfect for fans of dark fairytales, and it’ll be interesting to see Prime Video’s take on the duology — though no release date or window for the show has been announced.

American Horror Story’s Crystal Liu and Emmy-nominated writer-director James Wong are set as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers on Rise of the Empress. While Wong also worked on American Horror Story, the director is best known for his work on The X-Files, for which he co-wrote some of the series’ most acclaimed episodes, including “Home,” “Ice,” and “Beyond the Sea.”

Dao will serve as a co-executive producer of the series.
