The Conjuring Universe, inspired by the allegedly real-life cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, has revitalized the horror genre. It places a greater emphasis on building terror and dread over cheap jump scares and predictable slasher fodder. The interwoven threads of the films help to add weight and substance to its nightmarish and, at times, believable world. On top of that, its compelling rogue’s gallery of demonic entities have gone on to spawn spin-off movies of their own, Annabelle and The Nun.
