A new Game of Thrones spin-off centered around Aegon's Conquest is in the works with writer Mattson Tomlin, recently known for his work on The Batman and its upcoming sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has taken a step forward on the long-mooted Aegon's Conquest project by partnering with Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman - Part II with director Matt Reeves. He will craft a story around Aegon I Targaryen and his "bloody and brutal conquest" of the continent of Westeros.
As book readers will know, Aegon I Targaryen is easily one of the most influential Targaryens leading up to the era of Game of Thrones' Daenerys. He conquered six of Westeros' Seven Kingdoms (Dorne being the only hold-out) and became the first king of the Iron Throne, ruling with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys.
Given the historical significance of this particular event and the general interest surrounding the silver-haired family, HBO has floated the idea of an Aegon's Conquest project for some time, with a report last April indicating the prequel was in the early stages of development as part of the network's franchise-building plans.
House of the Dragon was a massively successful follow-up to Game of Thrones, scoring the biggest premiere in the premium cable network's history. The second season of the acclaimed fantasy series will launch this summer (possibly sometime in August), continuing the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood.
However, several Game of Thrones prequel and spin-off plans have fallen apart in the past. Martin revealed in January last year that HBO had shelved a few projects, but he didn't reveal which of those in discussion were on the back-burner, only that the Hedge Knight series is still moving forward and will enter production this year.
