Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 will add official mod support to the beloved role-playing game this September, developer Larian Studios has announced.
In a Steam post, Larian confirmed Patch 7 will include "an officially sanctioned toolkit for giving Lae’zel a mullet", coming first to PC and later to Mac, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The PC version arrives on an unspecified date in September 2024 while support for other platforms comes "shortly after", though it's unclear if this means September or later.
The Baldur's Gate 3 Toolkit will not only provide official mod support to PC — an improvement upon the current, unofficial mod support as players will encounter less technical issues, Larian said — but also allow non-PC players to encounter the usefulness and ridiculousness of mods.
Larian announced it was working on "a robust, cross-platform plan for mod support" in March but didn't reveal the release window until now. Some players will even have the chance to try it early, as the Baldur's Gate 3 Toolkit enters a closed alpha period for a handful of invited mod creators today, June 3.
All PC players will have the chance to get involved in July when Larian launches a closed beta, capped at around 1,000 players, to test the mods created in the closed alpha.
"With the intention of working through your feedback throughout the summer, it will give us time to polish off Patch 7 ready for release in September," Larian said. "In the meantime, we still have plenty coming your way, including some anniversary extravagance as we look back on the months since release.
"We’re also still pressing on with the development of an in-game photo mode, cross-play, and more fixes that will arrive later down the line." Patch 7 will otherwise include revised evil endings, "plus a whole bunch of fixes, quality of life improvements, and more," Larian said.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a Dungeon & Dragons based RPG which proved a smash hit upon its release in July 2023, earning myriad game of the year awards alongside a 10/10 review from IGN.
