Oppenheimer Is Headed Back to IMAX for One Week

If you missed the initial IMAX run of Oppenheimer, don’t worry: you may have just gotten one more chance.

Universal announced on Tuesday that it’s bringing it back to IMAX screens for a limited, one-week-only run starting this Friday, Nov. 3. But there’s a bit of a catch: you need to live in or have access to certain theaters in Los Angeles; Irvine, Calif.; New York; San Francisco; London; or Melbourne. See the six IMAX 70mm theaters that’ll be partaking below:

  • AMC CityWalk Stadium 19 IMAX (Hollywood, CA)
  • AMC Irvine Spectrum (Irvine, CA)
  • AMC Lincoln Square IMAX (New York, NY)
  • AMC Metreon 16 IMAX (San Francisco, CA)
  • BFI IMAX London (UK)
  • Melbourne Museum IMAX (Australia)

It’s not too surprising that Universal is trying to squeeze a bit more money from Oppenheimer before it finally has its home release on Nov. 21, especially considering how successful Christoper Nolan’s latest was on IMAX in particular. It grossed a massive $183 million on IMAX, making it IMAX’s fourth-highest-grossing film ever.

Overall, Oppenheimer has been a huge success for Universal, grossing nearly $950 million worldwide per Box Office Mojo. It’s broken countless records, especially debuting side-by-side with Barbie – we all know about the Barbenheimer phenomenon by now, though. Funny enough, Barbie got its own limited IMAX run in September.

While there’s not a ton of locations in this re-release, this could truly be the last chance to see Oppenheimer in IMAX, barring future special-event showings. And if you did miss the initial IMAX run, there’s good reason to try to snatch up some tickets.

In IGN’s 10/10 Oppenheimer review, Siddhant Adlakha wrote “the gigantic IMAX frame, nearly as tall as it is wide, is used to tremendous effect, not only to capture spectacle, but to push in dramatically to close-ups, and to portray sweeping New Mexico landscapes.”
