While Star Trek is undoubtedly one of the first mainstream science fiction stories to give people a hopeful view of the future, it wasn't the last. The 2015 movie The Martian by Drew Goddard and Ridley Scott had nothing to do with Star Trek, but it offered an even more optimistic view of the future. However, the two stories share one commonality. They were such aspirational stories about space exploration and the human spirit that NASA itself used these stories to draw attention to its missions.
