Princess Mononoke is an epic historical film from Studio Ghibli. In the '90s, most American audiences thought of Studio Ghibli as the creators of whimsical and peaceful children's movies, which is a gross oversimplification. Elements of whimsy, nature, and joy are a huge part of Ghibli movies, but those themes would ring hollow without Hayao Miyazaki's philosophical and nuanced storytelling. Not many know that Neil Gaiman played a huge part bringing Princess Mononoke to the American conscience, helping it become one of the greatest and most beloved animated films to date.
