Riot Games has given its long-awaited League of Legends fighting game a proper name: 2XKO.

It’s a title that touches on the project’s 2v2, tag-team gameplay, but more importantly, it rolls off the tongue easier than its "Project L" codename. Riot says it is expecting to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S sometime in 2025, with players encouraged to follow along at @Play2XKO on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook for further updates.

With development in full swing and a name finalized, the 2XKO team is looking to tighten its bond with the fighting game community. It will do so with playtests and demo opportunities throughout 2024, starting with a chance to play at EVO Japan this April. Those interested in participating in at-home playtests, which are expected to begin before the end of the year, can sign up on the official website.

We already know quite a bit about Riot’s League of Legends fighting game even though we only just learned its name today. The endeavor was officially announced back in 2019 under the codename Project L. At the time, the studio announced that it was creating the game with the help of Radiant Entertainment, which it had acquired three years earlier.

This spinoff is set in the same universe as Riot’s legendary MOBA game, and it already has a select list of recognizable Champions set to make an appearance. These include Ekko, Ahri, Darius, and more. In August of last year, for example, we learned that fan-favorite League of Legends sword user, Yasuo, will also appear in the fighting game as a playable character.

Riot previously confirmed 2XKO will be a free-to-play experience that will be “respectful of both your time and your wallet.” We got to go hands-on with the studio’s fighting game at EVO 2023, giving us a chance to see how the tag-team combat and characters fit into the world of League of Legends.
