The animated series X-Men '97 is easily one of the most anticipated new Marvel projects of 2024, and now that series will be getting a prequel comic. Marvel Comics has revealed the first details about the X-Men '97 series debuting in March 2024.

The X-Men '97 comic is written by Steve Foxe and drawn by Salva Espin. Foxe and Espin previously collaborated on X-Men '92: House of XCII, a series that explores a universe where the events of 2019's House of X play out with the cast of X-Men: The Animated Series. Foxe has also penned recent X-books like Dark X-Men and Dead X-Men.

The X-Men '97 comic is designed to bridge the gap between the original animated series and its upcoming revival, teasing new revelations about characters like Wolverine, Storm and Jubilee.

"There's a very good chance I wouldn't be writing comics today if not for the impact X-Men: The Animated Series had on me as a kid—heck, the voice actors from the show are still the voices I hear when I read the comics today!” Foxe said in Marvel's press release. "Getting to reunite with my X-men '92: House of XCII collaborator Salva Espín on this official prelude to X-Men '97 has felt like a bucket-list project a lifetime in the making, and Beau [DeMayo] and the rest of the '97 team gave us a fantastic runway to come up with our own original tale that feeds right into what viewers will get to experience in the new season."

X-Men '97 #1 will be released on March 27, 2024. Does that mean we'll see the animated series debut around the same window? Only time will tell.

Marvel is still keeping the X-Men '97 animated series closely under wraps heading into the new year, though we did get a closer glimpse of the show at Comic-Con 2023. Marvel also reconfirmed a 2024 release date for the show, alongside other animated projects like Black Panther: Eyes of Wakanda and the newly renamed Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
