Dave Filoni now has an even greater role within Star Wars, being promoted to chief creative officer at Lucasfilm.

The news was revealed in a Vanity Fair story on Tuesday, revealing that the Ahsoka creator will be much more involved in early development now. He'll work alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and head of development Carrie Beck.

“In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways," he said.

"In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on," he added. "When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase."

A Creative Force

The appointment is a big deal, although not entirely unexpected given how involved Filoni and his storylines have been in the Star Wars universe, which continues to expand. He collaborated closely with George Lucas on animated series The Clone Wars, co-created Star Wars Rebels, and would continue to work on Disney+'s live-action Star Wars series.

In a huge announcement, Kennedy revealed during Star Wars Celebration in April that Filoni would be directing his own live-action Star Wars movie.

This also bodes fairly well for those hoping for a second season of Ahsoka. Filoni created the series, which took several of his animated characters into live-action, earlier this year, although there's been no word on if we'll be getting more of it. The Vanity Fair story says Filoni will continue developing his film, as well as "exploring" a possible second season of Ahsoka, as he steps into his new role.

Ahsoka star Rosario Dawson commented on that briefly in the Vanity Fair story, saying “I mean, they’ve not said anything officially, but I remember when we were at Star Wars Celebration in London and they were like, ‘We’re giving Dave a movie!’ And I was like, ‘I kind of feel like that means we’re probably going to get a second season.’ For a while now, and especially now with the strike and everything, no one can say anything. But he did say he was working on an outline. So, we’ll see.”

Although Star Wars' schedule remains in flux, the next project should be the live-action Skeleton Crew series sometime in 2024, with The Acolyte and Andor Season 2 also on the horizon.
