The inaugural season of Star Trek: Discovery was different from other entries in the saga created by Gene Roddenberry in many ways, but one. Like every "new" iteration of Star Trek since NBC canceled The Original Series, it was met with skepticism and anger from diehard fans. Fans had trouble connecting to the show because the man in the center seat was a secret visitor from the Mirror Universe. Yet, for all the complaints and his in-narrative villainy, Discovery's Gabriel Lorca was a good "bad" Star Trek captain.
