When NBC's New Amsterdam opens, it feels like any other medical show. A handsome doctor rises early, puts on sweats, and runs through the streets of New York, ending up at a hospital. In the first five minutes, the audience meets paramedics, patients who are on their way to the hospital, and other doctors. The handsome doctor ends up in the locker room, and soon viewers learn that he can speak Spanish fluently and is the new medical director, there for his very first day. Before the episode hits the 10-minute mark, the new medical director has introduced himself to a room of doctors and fired the entire cardiac-surgical department. That's when most viewers realize that New Amsterdam is not like other medical shows.
