Netflix's live-action remake of Yu Yu Hakusho, which is set to be released on Dec. 14, 2023, has received its first teaser trailer during Netflix's Geeked Week 2023.

Yu Yu Hakusho was first released as a manga series back in 1990 and tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a teenager who is killed by a car while trying to save a child's life. That is not the end of his tale, however, as he returns to the human world as a Spirit Detective and is tasked with solving paranormal mysteries on Earth.

The manga was adapted as an anime in 1992 and we consider it one of the best in the genre.

"Widely regarded as one of the best examples of battle shonen anime, Yu Yu Hakusho balances the core story elements, intense action and character depth, in a way that highlights what’s best about shonen anime," IGN wrote about Yu Yu Hakusho. It’s got engaging dialogue, romance, and an exploration of the idea that sometimes the best hero is an atypical one."

Urameshi will be played by Takumi Kitamura (Tokyo Revengers), and he will be joined by Jun Shison (Bubble, Battle of Supreme High) as the fox demon Kurama; Kanata Hongo (Kingdom, Attack on Titan) as Hiei, the Master of the Evil Eye; and Shuhei Uesugi as Kazuma Kurabawa.

Yu Yu Hakusho is just another one of Netflix's live-action anime remakes and follows the new One Piece series from earlier this year. In our review of the live-action take on One Piece, we said it "creates an interesting variation on the long-running manga and anime that works in parts, and the Netflix series is at its best when it charts its own path in response to the changes made by showrunner Matt Owens and the writing staff."
