Although elves existed in mythology around the world long before J.R.R. Tolkien published his epic The Lord of the Rings in 1954, his elves have specific attributes of their own. They're known for being largely slender and fair of face, but physical characteristics can differ from realm to realm. They are one of the oldest races in Middle-earth, gifted with the power of speech. Not all living beings talk, of course, especially in Tolkien.
