Tom Cruise has revealed Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the official title for the eighth film in the spy action thriller franchise.
Alongside the name we have the movie’s first poster, which shows Cruise as Ethan Hunt, and a release date: May 23, 2025. In an Instagram post, below, Cruise said: "Every choice has led to this."
Fans were also treated to the debut trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which sees Cruise doing what he does best in the Mission: Impossible films: run as fast as he can and perform death-defying stunts. We see the Hollywood action star enjoying a spot of scuba diving, giving a car chase a spin, and, shirt off of course, rolling about in a knife fight. At one point Cruise hangs on to the side of a plane for dear life. Meanwhile, Angela Bassett is now confirmed to return as CIA Director Erika Sloane.
Mission: Impossible 8 was originally meant to be called Dead Reckoning Part Two following 2023’s Dead Reckoning Part One, but the 'Part One' was dropped for the film's release on Paramount+, suggesting a name change that is now confirmed. The sequel was delayed due to last year's SAG-AFTRA strike.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning sees Ethan Hunt and his crew face off against an advanced sentient AI. The film's story even influenced President Joe Biden, who said he was more concerned about the use of artificial intelligence after watching the film.
Despite a strong opening weekend, with the film making $56.2 million domestically, it was later reported that Dead Reckoning was on track to lose $100 million. It was no doubt impacted by opening just a week ahead of the box office phenomenon that was Barbenheimer, the name given to the simultaneous release date of Barbie and Oppenheimer in 2023.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One got an 8/10 from IGN's review. We said: "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning sees Tom Cruise’s anti-algorithm crusade take hilariously literal form, in a fun, intense and self-reflexive action saga that works despite itself."
