The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is largely responsible for modern fantasy. Tolkien's idea to make "a fairy story... written for and read by adults" proved to be incredibly popular, and his work continues to live on today. However, like many books that came out in the 1950s, some elements of Tolkien's work haven't aged particularly well.
