DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that Peacemaker Season 2 will be part of the new DCU, despite Season 1 seemingly not being canon.
Gunn was asked on Threads if the highly anticipated new season of Peacemaker will be canon after the co-CEO confirmed its star John Cena would be reprising his role in the DCU. He was also asked if this continuity (or lack of) will be addressed, to which Gunn replied: "Yes and yes."
Confusion comes as TV show seasons usually take place in the same universe, of course, but Peacemaker Season 1 is aligned with the DC Extended Universe, which began with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel and will end with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
The new DCU will kick off with Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy, and Gunn has previously said work on Peacemaker Season 2 will begin immediately after the latter. Things get a little complicated, however, as this wasn't announced as part of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monster, which includes an additional four films and four TV shows.
Peacemaker Season 2 might just fall into Chapter 2, of course, and its separation from Season 1 and the DCEU might be explained through it getting a subtitle instead of officially being known as Season 2. This is perhaps a little like Marvel's Daredevil reboot Born Again, that's separate from the original Netflix series despite still starring Charlie Cox.
Gunn said in September that it's "okay to be confused" about the current plans though, with many DC fans finding the mixed messaging regarding characters like Peacemaker and Blue Beetle unclear. "It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet."
Fans will likely be happy for any version of Peacemaker Season 2 given the positive response to its debut. In our 9/10 review, IGN said: "HBO Max’s Peacemaker is the stunning crystallization of James Gunn’s examination of flawed heroes and the power of friendship."
