Silk: Spider Society, a live-action show that was once meant to be the first in a series of Spider-Man spinoffs headed to Prime Video, is no longer moving forward at the streaming platform.

The news first broke on Variety and THR today, which IGN has also confirmed with a source close to the production. Former The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang was at the helm of Silk: Spider Society, and we're told she still remains at Amazon under her multi-year overall deal. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller had served as executive producers along with Amy Pascal.

Sony Pictures Television will reportedly now attempt to shop the series to other studios, meaning it could still see the light of day - just not at Prime Video.

Interestingly, the news comes just days after Prime Video had confirmed it officially greenlit a live-action Noir series, starring Nicolas Cage as the chararacter he voiced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. When Prime Video first announced Silk in 2022, it was part of a multi-series deal that would have it working with Sony to produce multiple live-action Spider-Man spinoffs. Sources tell IGN that that plan is still in place, despite Silk not moving forward.

We first started to learn of signs of trouble surrounding Silk late last year. In November 2023, industry newsletter The Ankler reported that the Writers Guild of America had threatened Amazon Studios with legal action over shows whose development remained on pause nearly two months after the WGA strike ended in September. One of those shows, it was reported at the time, was Silk.

In February, another report from The Ankler said Silk's writers room had been "paused" despite staying in "active development." The writers on the show has reportedly been given the go-ahead to pursue other work while the pause was in place.

The show was based on the comics series created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, and was set to follow Cindy Moon, a woman who's bitten by the same spider who bit Peter Parker. The comic series followed her as she escaped imprisonment in an underground bunker, learned all about her powers, and attempted to reunite with her family.
