Cross-platform functionality is a highly desired feature not only in Civilization 7, but also in every multiplayer game as it allows you to play with your friends no matter the platform.
Civilization 7 will release on PC, Mac, and consoles on the same date (Tuesday, Feb. 11) for the first time in the series’ history. As a result, players will wonder, “Will there be cross-platform support?” In short, yes, but there a few limitations.
Here’s everything you need to know about how cross-platform multiplayer works in Civilization 7.
How does cross-platform multiplayer in Civilization 7 work?
Civilization 7 supports cross-platform play, but there are limitations to cross-platform multiplayer depending on your platform. These are:
- For those playing on PC, Mac, Xbox, or PlayStation, up to five players are supported in the Antiquity & Exploration Ages, and up to eight players are supported in the Modern Age.
- For the Nintendo Switch, up to four players are supported in the Antiquity & Exploration Ages, and up to six players are supported in the Modern Age.
- Additionally, the Switch version is not expected to support map sizes of Standard and above. If you’re playing cross-platform with a player on the Nintendo Switch, your games will have to follow these limitations as well.
Finally, know you must first link your 2K account to Civilization 7 in order to access cross-platform multiplayer. Doing this also unlocks Napoleon in Civ 7, if you needed an extra incentive.
Civilization 7 cross-saves explained
Civilization 7 supports cross-progression as long as you play on the same 2K account that was linked to your initial copy of Civilization 7.
Additionally, Civilization 7 does not support cross-buy, but, it does support dual-gen entitlement. This means that if you purchase the game on PlayStation or Xbox, you’ll be able to play Civ 7 across console generations. PlayStation owners will be able to play on PlayStation 4 and 5, while Xbox owners will be able to play on the Xbox One and Series X|S as long as you’re playing on the same PlayStation Network account or Xbox network account.
However, it’s important to note that physical copies on PS5 don’t provide you with dual-gen entitlement for PS4 as Civilization 7 is only available digitally on the PS4.
