Pinocchio star Christoph Waltz has joined Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein.
During an interview with Collider, Del Toro confirmed that he’s cast Waltz in the upcoming adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic monster story.
“I'm doing Frankenstein,” he confirmed. “We're working on it. We start shooting in February, and it's a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein.”
Frankenstein will star Andrew Garfield in an unknown role, alongside Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac.
Based on the original 19th century horror novel, Del Toro’s Frankenstein adaptation has been in the works for some time, with the famed director planning a version of the story as far back as 2010.
Now, the film is finally taking shape, and with Waltz on board, it’s looking closer than ever.
“I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn't have done 10 years ago,” he explained about his long in-development adaptation. “Now I'm brave or crazy enough or something, and we're gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”
This earlier version would have featured Doug Jones as the Monster, and while there’s been no word yet on whether Jones will appear in the film, it could still be a possibility. Either way, Waltz’s involvement is something to celebrate. After all, their collaboration on Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio has already set the standard for what they can do together.
IGN’s Pinocchio review gave it 9/10 and said: “Guillermo del Toro sprinkles his signature dark whimsy on a fairytale classic with stunning puppetry and catchy original songs. Filled with heart, humor, and historical grounding, it’s a phenomenal feat of animated cinema.”
