Cinefiles who enjoy the occasional relaxing hobby are in for a treat. Among the new LEGO sets for August 2024 is one that’s right up your alley: a set based on the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic film Jaws. It’s comprised of nearly 1,500 pieces, costs $149.99, and is available to purchase right now, exclusively at the LEGO Store. The only slight catch is that it’s currently backordered, but only by a couple of weeks at the time of this writing.

LEGO Ideas: Jaws

This is another of the LEGO sets aimed at an adult audience, with an 18+ age recommendation. That means, in addition to being geared toward people who are old enough to have fond memories of watching the shark movie, it’s meant more for display rather than play.

First you build a base, featuring frothy ocean water and a border with a placard displaying the memorable movie quote, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” Then you build the ship, the Orca, which has an adjustable boom and rigging, as well as a removable roof so you can see the detailed cabin within.

You also get minifigures for police chief Martin Brody, marine biologist Matt Hooper, and shark hunter Sam Quint. Then there’s the shark itself, which can be displayed emerging from the water as it attacks the ship, or on a separate stand (see the gallery below).

Also included in the box is a full-color booklet with instructions for how to build the set, as well as interviews with the makers of the set. You can also use the LEGO Builder app, which takes you step-by-step and has 3D models.

Jaws is generally considered one of the greatest movies of all time. In fact, it’s often credited with creating the idea of the summer blockbuster. It came out during in June 1975 and managed to rake in over $235 million domestically, a feat no other film had accomplished to that point.

Roger Ebert gave Jaws a 4-star review, praising the memorable imagery and three-dimensional characters, which was (and still is) somewhat unusual in the thriller genre. He also praises the suspense Spielberg builds throughout the film, writing, “It has the necessary amount of blood and guts to work -- but none extra.” Indeed.
