Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is missing LGBTQ main characters. In nearly 25 years, the NBC drama has only had two queer series regulars: Dr. George Huang and Katriona "Kat" Tamin. Huang's identity as a gay man was underutilized during his 12 years on the show, while Kat, a bisexual woman, was written out after just over two seasons. By not integrating well-rounded LGBTQ protagonists into its main cast, SVU lags behind other shows like Law & Order: Organized Crime, 9-1-1: Lone Star and Found -- all of which have demonstrated that multifaceted queer characters can tell compelling stories. SVU should take notes from these series and provide greater LGBTQ representation.
