The anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's Monsters manga will premiere on Netflix in January 2024, telling the tale of the legendary swordsman Ryuma, who appeared in One Piece's Thriller Bark arc.

The official Netflix Anime X/Twitter account revealed that one of Oda's earliest one-shot stories would be coming to the streaming service at the beginning of next year. The anime, titled Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation, centres around Ryuma, the renowned samurai who hails from the Land of Wano in One Piece.

Ryuma isn't alone in his swordfighting adventures; Freya, a previous survivor of a major dragon attack, and Cyrano, a fellow skilled swordsman, are also along for the ride. The official poster for the Netflix anime features all three characters alongside a firebreathing dragon, bringing fear and terror to the townspeople.

This new series is the latest of Oda's works to make the leap from page to screen, following on from the hugely popular live-action adaptation of One Piece, which premiered on Netflix in August. A second season is already in the works, meaning fans willl be able to set sail with Monkey D. Luffy and his ragtag crew once again.

Oda had specific demands for Netflix regarding the live-action One Piece series, which will likely be the case again with the forthcoming Monsters adaptation. The official site for the anime reveals Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 helmer Sunghoo Park as the director, with his E&H production handling the animation.
