2023 gave audiences dozens of three-dimensional, powerful female characters, especially the live-action version of everyone’s favorite plastic doll to the feminine twist on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Barbie and Bella Baxter, the protagonist of Poor Things, didn’t appear to have anything in common at all. A sci-fi tale of a woman reborn and a comedy about a toy couldn't be more different. But much like these characters, there was much more under the surface than at first glance. Their coming-of-age journeys were much more mirrored than what their trailers and marketing implied.
