DC Games Don't Actually Have to Be Canon to the Superman: Legacy-Led DCU, James Gunn Says

Not every incoming DC video game will be canon to the new DCU, which kicks off in 2025 with Superman: Legacy and Creature Commandos.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn previously revealed the DCU will incorporate other media including video games, but it turns out not everything developed within the world of DC will have to be canon.

Threads user hen_vratski asked if it was a requirement for all incoming Warner Bros. Games titles to be set in the same DC film universe from now on, to which Gunn replied simply: "No."

This is perhaps unsurprising to some fans given DC's other practices. While the DCU will be a shared universe between five films and five TV shows (so far), for example, several other film and TV show projects are still being developed such as Batman: Caped Crusader and Merry Little Batman.

This not being a requirement for games also frees up the likes of Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Monolith Productions' Wonder Woman to exist in its own space without crossing messy lines with the DCU.

Though Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is expected a year ahead of the DCU, on February 2, 2024, its existence as part of the Arkham series would likely complicate things if Rocksteady continues the franchise down the road.
