As a genre, science fiction has always been about how the modern advancements of the world can grow into something greater so long as the reader or viewer can suspend their disbelief. In a perfect world, some technologies from these stories can even be adapted to the real world, giving close approximations of what was. For example, while people can't fly like Iron Man, his repulsors and armor have led to the creation of more realistic exosuits and water-based jetpacks. But sci-fi horror was always a different arena that used science to ask questions the world wasn't quite ready to answer.
