Star Trek: Lower Decks is dedicated to exploring the forgotten aspects of the Star Trek universe, and that isn't limited to just characters. Entire species have received surprisingly rich development in the animated series' hands, most notably the Orions, whose onscreen appearances were strictly limited before D'Vana Tendi arrived in the season premiere. Other races have received similar treatment, such as the Andorians and Tamarians who each have notable representatives onboard the U.S.S. Cerritos. The show's status as canon has allowed it to significantly flesh out their cultures and traditions in ways the more straightforward series haven't: by giving neglected alien races the same kind of attention it gives underused supporting characters.
