Stephen King has had his works adapted for decades and even written screenplays himself, but his movie and TV adaptations have always been on extremes of hit or miss. While Stanley Kubrick's The Shining has become an icon in horror films, King himself hated this version, preferring the TV miniseries from 1997. When Mike Flanagan directed Gerald's Game for Netflix in 2017, a beautiful pairing of creatives happened. Flanagan seemed to understand the elements King put into his writing and bring those with him onto the screen instead of only the story.
