The world of The Lord of the Rings is a historical study unto itself. J.R.R. Tolkien developed a world with a history so rich that literary scholars are still poring over every scrap of information he left behind to piece together a history of the world. Ironically, this somewhat fulfills Tolkien's wish for his world's story to be compiled by multiple sources and analyzed like any real world history. Still, the greatest of these sources is The Silmarillion.
