We still don't have all the details, but Disney+ has shared a few more details about its plan to crack down on users sharing their accounts with those outside of their homes.
Disney CFO Hugh Johnston discussed these changes during Disney's Q1 FY24 Earnings Call, sharing Disney+ will begin presenting those "suspected of improper sharing" with new ways to get those people outside of their households their own Disney+ accounts this summer. Later this year, it will give users an option to add these people to their account, but no pricing was given.
"As it relates to the opportunity we see on paid sharing, beginning this summer, Disney Plus accounts suspected of improper sharing will be presented with new capabilities to allow their borrowers to start their own subscription," Johnston said. "Later this calender year, account holders who want to allow access to individuals from outside their household and will be able to add them to their accounts for an additional fee."
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney+ would be cracking down on password sharing in 2024 back in August 2023 alongside saying he still isn't sure how much this new initiative will drive growth for the service.
Disney+ began its password-sharing mission in Canada back in November 1, and it looks like it will be rolling out in a much bigger fashion in just a few months.
It was also stated during the call that Disney+ lost 1.3 million subscribers in the last quarter following a price increase for the service. However, it also cut its streaming business' losses by $300 million.
Additionally, the earnings call revealed some exciting news for Disney fans, including that Disney has bought a $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games to create an "expansive" universe within Fortnite, Moana is getting a surprise sequel this November, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is officially getting a second season at Disney+, and that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour will stream exclusively on Disney+ in March.
