Both highly anticipated and a surprising success, HBO's The Last of Us -- based on the video game of the same name -- premiered its first season on January 15, 2023. Just two weeks later, after a debut second only to Game of Thrones, HBO announced that it had renewed the drama for a second season. Creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were already at work on writing the next installment when the WGA went on strike, followed closely by SAG-AFTRA, bringing Hollywood to a screeching halt.
