A brand new Star Wars movie directed by Jon Favreau is on the way and it is called The Mandalorian & Grogu. The film is set to go into production later this year and the team shared a first look image at what we can expect.

The news was revealed by StarWars.com and it was also confirmed that Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni will all be on board to produce the movie.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

"Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen," added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

Furthermore, the Star Wars team shared that The Mandalorian & Grogu will "lead Lucasfilm's ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni."

As a reminder, Filoni's film looks to close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other New Republic-focused Disney+ series. This film, clearly, will also play a giant part in that Avengers-sounding movie.

James Mangold is taking things even father back in time and will focus on the "dawning of the Force," while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's movie will star Daisy Ridley's Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.

Notably missing from this slate of directors is Taika Waititi, who was also said to be working on his own Star Wars film. His film may be part of the next wave of Star Wars films and these four may be the ones set to be released first. In November 2023, Waititi said he wants to recapture the joy of the Original Trilogy Star Wars films.

As if that wasn't enough big news, the press release casually gives us our first confirmation that Ahsoka Season 2 is currently being developed, even though we all had assumed it would be back for more.

The Mandalorian & Grogu looks set to be the first Star Wars film to arrive in theaters since 2019' The Rise of Skywalker and since it was said Star Wars movies would be going on a hiatus. There have been other potential Star Wars films announced, like The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson's trilogy, the Rogue Squadron movie, and the D.B. Weiss and David Benioff trilogy, but those are either off the schedule or canceled.

As for The Mandalorian on Disney+, we are still waiting for news on Season 4 and, following this announcement, whether we will see Din Djarin and Grogu together again on the small or big screen first!
