With long-standing franchises like Final Fantasy moving away from turn-based combat, it’s easy to see how some JRPG fans might be worried about it becoming a thing of the past. Turn-based combat has been criticized as being too same-y, with some battle systems simplified to the point of winning fights by repeating the same attack over and over again. Going back and playing old turn-based games on the NES or even the SNES grants this experience—a sort of push-this-button-to-win kind of gameplay that works when grinding for levels but takes the impact out of boss fights.
