While Amazon MGM's live-action Masters of the Universe film is still a little while away, the studio announced today that it has tapped actress Camila Mendes to play Teela.
In a press release, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Mendes will portray the Captain of the Royal Guard, joining actor Nicholas Galitzine, who was officially cast as Prince Adam/He-Man last May.
Before her casting, Mendes was best known for her portrayal as Veronica Lodge in the CW original TV series Riverdale, which ran from 2017 until 2023. Mendes also appeared in leading roles in films such as 2022's Do Revenge as well as Upgraded and Música in 2024.
In the Masters of the Universe franchise, Teela is a highly skilled fighter who, as previously mentioned, is the Royal Guard's Captain at the Eternos palace. Additionally, the character has in some adaptations been a romantic interest for Prince Adam/He-Man. Mendes becomes the second person to portray Teela in a live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe, following actress Chelsea Field, who portrayed the character in the 1987 film.
Beyond the two leads for the upcoming film, Amazon MGM has kept a tight-lip on details regarding the film, including its plot. However, we do know that Bumblebee director Travis Knight will be directing the film, while Chris Butler is handling the screenplay. The film will be released in theatres on June 5, 2026.
It's been a long road for a reboot of Masters of the Universe to hit the big screen. Before Amazon MGM snatched up the project, Netflix was originally planning to release the film before scrapping the project in July 2023.
