Entering the 1990s, Marvel was by far the predominant American comic book publisher, and given the company's diverse library of "exploitable" characters, was viewed as a hot property on Wall Street. In 1989, investor Ron Perelman's MacAndrews & Forbes firm purchased Marvel with an eye toward expansion. On July 15, 1991, Marvel went public on the New York Stock Exchange, making an initial public offering of 40% of the company's stock, reportedly raising as much as $63 million for MacAndrews & Forbes.
